Replacing the Restrictive Stock Turbo Downpipe
A downpipe connects the turbocharger turbine outlet to the exhaust system. Exhaust gases flow through the turbocharger, into the downpipe, and out the exhaust system. Factory downpipes are often restrictive, featuring rough bends and in some cases portions of the downpipe are crimped when space is minimal between the engine and firewall.

How it Works:

In a turbodiesel, the turbocharger creates all the necessary backpressure the engine needs for peak performance. Therefore, a free flowing, non-restrictive exhast system will theoretically yield the best possible performance. Aftermarket companies offer larger downpipes, and in some situations downpipes with smoother transitions. While performance improvements are small with only a downpipe swap, a performance downpipe completes any additional exhaust modifications so you know that you are getting the most from your exhaust mods (granted your aftermarket exhaust system did not come with an upgraded downpipe). |

While gains are relatively small for the price, a downpipe upgrade is encouraged for performance applications. What is the point of having a free flowing exhaust system with the restrictive factory downpipe? Many exhaust kits come with a new, upgraded downpipe. |
