Diesel Fuel Additives

To understand the benefit of diesel fuel additives, it is important to understand the problem with ULSD, & the concept of cetane ratings (cetane number). The main problem with ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) is that is lacks the lubrication found in LSD (Low Sulfur Diesel). A cetane rating or number is a measurement of ignition delay; the time between the start of the injection cycle and the start of combustion. The higher the cetane number, the less ignition delay. Less ignition delay means there is more time available per power stroke to completely burn the fuel. An increased cetane rating can therefore increase the efficiency & performance of a diesel engine. A good fuel additive addresses both of these concerns. It adds necessary lubrication to diesel fuel & increases the cetane level to increase engine efficiency.

- No installation necessary; just follow the directions on the bottle.

- Above a cetane rating of 55, performance gains plateau, meaning raising the cetane beyond 55 yields no additional performance gains.
- Many fuel stations do not advertise cetane ratings of fuel.

- #2 diesel fuel sold in the United States must legally have a minimum cetane rating of 40.
- Most diesel fuel in the United States is estimated to be in the 42-45 range. Premium diesel blends are higher in cetane rating.
- Performance gains plateau at a cetane rating of approx. 55. Therefore, it is not beneficial to operate using fuel with a cetane rating higher than 55.
- Operating below the manufacturer's recommended cetane rating may cause a loss of performance & decreased fuel economy, but does not affect engine longevity.
